Another use for mortars is for the crushing and mixing of medicines. This applies to herbs and crushable plant materials that may be used in medicine, forms of holistic and homeopathic healing, magic and/or witchcraft! The mortar and pestle combination was a main staple of the apothecary's trade in Europe and the United States up until the advent of pharmacology and the technologically savvy pharmacist.
