Mount Suribachi

On the small and currently uninhabited island of Iwo Jima, Japan, the most prominent feature is Mount Suribachi. As we've discussed, suribachi is Japanese for mortar. Mount Suribachi is a dormant volcano. The ground surrounding the mountain is hot, due to near-surface magma stores. Mount Suribachi's resemblance to a spice bowl is a matter of personal opinion, but it's certainly interesting that the Japanese thought to name such a prominent geological feature after it!
